NOMAD
Nomad after its merging with Tan Ru (2267)
The Nomad MK-15c space probe was a interstellar information-gathering device created by Jackson Roykirk and launched from Earth in 2002 as the planet's first interstellar vessel to seek out new life. It was a prototype and the only one of its series built.
During its mission, Nomad was damaged by a meteorite and lost contact with Earth. It later encountered an alien probe called Tan Ru in deep space. The two units merged, resulting in a powerful new construct with faulty programming, which destroyed anything that was perceived as imperfect, a condition that apparently applied to any organic living being.
A model of Nomad (2152)
Travis Mayweather had a model of the Nomad probe in his quarters aboard Enterprise. (ENT: "Dead Stop")
Nomad was eventually discovered by the USS Enterprise in 2267, shortly after it wiped out four billion inhabitants of the Malurian system. It eventually destroyed itself after discovering that it was imperfect after mistaking James T. Kirk for Roykirk, its creator. (TOS: "The Changeling")
Historical schematic of the Nomad probe (2002)
Background
Pieces of Nomad showed up again in the Romulan cloaking device in TOS: "The Enterprise Incident", Flint's M-4 robot in TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah", and the prop for Nomad's head was placed atop Sargon's storage vessel in TOS: "Return to Tomorrow".
Among the in-jokes that appeared on the engineering cutaway of the Enterprise-D is an image of Nomad located where the ship's launch probes are supposed to be.
In the episode "Dream Weaver" of seaQuest DSV, when the stormer alien falls to his death, he lands beside a monument marked as the "Nomad Probe", launched in 2002, designed to seek out new lifeforms.

Lore

Played by Brent Spiner
Episode: TNG 114 - Datalore
An android, of the same model and appearance as Lt. Commander Data of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. Created, as was Data, by Doctors Noonien and Juliana Soong on Omicron Theta, Lore's emotional functions were more like organic creatures (thanks to an emotion chip developed by the Soongs), though completely malevolent and self-serving, with no regard for life.
He was responsible for the death of all colonists on Omicron Theta and proved exceptionally dangerous during several encounters with his "brother" Data and the crew of the Enterprise. He met his ultimate fate while attempting to lead a rogue Borg faction, when a group of them rebelled against him. After deactivation and dismantling, his emotion chip was salvaged from his body.
Borg

Episode: TNG 142 - Q WHO
Origin: Delta Quadrant. A cybernetic life-form thousands of years old which is part organic, part artificial life. They have advanced well beyond Federation science, unknown prior to a confrontation with the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D arranged by the entity known as "Q" circa stardate 42761 ( 2365) some 7,000 light-years past explored Federation space in the Delta Quadrant.
The Borg have a singular goal, namely the consumption of technology, rather than wealth or political expansion as most species seek.
According to their spokesman, in the form of an assimilated Captain Jean-Luc Picard, the Borg only want to "raise the quality of life" of the species they "assimilate." (See "Best of Both Worlds") Androids, for example, they view as primitive and obsolete. Born humanoid, they are almost immediately implanted with bio-chips that link their brains to a collective consciousness via a unique subspace frequency emitted by each drone.
This collective consciousness is experienced by the Borg as "thousands" of voices — they are collectively aware, but not aware of themselves as separate individuals. Consequently, they never speak in singular pronouns, referring to themselves when required as merely "Third of Five," for instance.
The Borg ingest only energy to drive their technological system via an energy conduit port. Their bio-chips synthesize any organic nutrients needed. Among the many advantages their collective consciousness affords them, the Borg hive-mind allows for instantaneous adaptations to shield and phaser frequency modulations in combat; they are also able to regenerate and repair their massive cube ship with the power of their collective thoughts alone.
The hive-mind drones do not register as individual life-signs when scanned, only as a mass reading and then at a bare minimum. The sick and injured are not healed but "reabsorbed" by the removal of the receiver piece, which leads to self-destructive dissolve.
When shipboard during dormancy in their regenerative mode, power is minimal and the vessel's EM field cuts off. They have a knock-out drug or procedure for humans, using a drill-tap placed behind the left ear, that works immediately but wears off in less than a minute.
